Austin Strong, who already had penned 5 Broadway plays since 1906, was at the top of his form with the smash hit Three Wise Fools (1918-1919) when Seventh Heaven opened at the Booth Theatre in 1922. Another blockbuster, the play ran for 704 performances.
Helen Menken (later to become the first wife of actor Humphrey Bogart) and George Gaul originated the roles of Diane and Chico.
