Goethe, a struggling lawyer, wrote The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), a novel that catapulted him to fame and the attention of a young nobleman who would later become a Grand Duke in the Holy Roman Empire. Goethe became his trusted adviser and continued to publish both literary and scientific works. The poem The Sorcerer's Apprentice was published in 1797 when Goethe was 48 years old.
Walt Disney was interested in introducing classical music to the general public through an animated feature. A short-reel entitled The Sorcerer's Apprentice starring Mickey Mouse with a score from the late French composer Paul Dukas (1865-1935) was commissioned to prototype his idea. It is included as a segment of Fantasia.
Although a critical success, the film was a money-loser for Disney and did not begin to cover it's initial costs until it's 5th re-release in 1969.
