Kinder und Hausmärchen

Kinder und Hausmärchen

by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

First published in 1812 as a collection of 86 German fairy tales and expanded in later editions to include more than 200 stories by 1857, it was translated into English as Grimms' Fairy Tales.  Schneewitchen or "Little Snow White" was the 53rd tale.

Walt Disney was attracted to the story because of the comedic possibilites of seven dwarfs.   It was released in 1937 as the first feature-length animation in motion picture history.

FILM COMMENTS

Walt Disney, a successful producer of short-reel animation, thought he could release a feature animation for roughly 10 times the cost of a short-reel or $250,000.   He was forced to mortgage his house when production costs surpassed $1 million.

Within 2 years of release, the film, which had taken in $6.5 million, was the highest grossing sound film of all time - a record soon eclipsed by Gone with the Wind (1939).
