Biography

BIO

Alan Hale was born Rufus Edward MacKahan in Washington, D.C., in 1892.

One of the early actors in film, Hale made his motion picture debut in 1911, at the age of 19.   When not in front of the camera, Hale also appeared on stage, making his Broadway debut in 1913, at the age of 21.   He appeared in 6 productions through 1933.

Primarily a film actor, Hale was a popular supporting star during the 1920s.

He made a smooth transition from silent to sound film and continued to be in great demand as a support player throughout his career.

In 1938, 16 years after his role of "Little John" in Robin Hood (1922) with Douglas Fairbanks, Hale reprised the role for the Technicolor blockbuster The Adventures Of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn.

By the time of his last film role in 1950, Hale had appeared in more than 165 feature films spanning almost 4 decades.

He married the actress Gretchen Hartman (1897-1979) in 1914.   The couple raised three children, one of whom became the actor Alan Hale, Jr. (1921-1990).

Hale died suddenly of a viral infection in Hollywood, in 1950.   He was 57 years old.
