Alexander Carr was born in Russia, in 1878.
He made his Broadway debut in 1907, at the age of 29, in a starring role in The Gay White Way. He also starred in the 1913 hit Potash and Perlmutter as well as Mendel, Inc. in 1929. He wrote and performed his last Broadway play in 1931.
Carr first appeared in silent film in a starring role, a reprise of his stage hit Potash and Perlmutter, in 1923, at the age of 45, for Goldwyn Pictures. He went on to appear in another 15 features, including his last film, Christmas in July (1940) with Dick Powell.
He was married to Helen Ryan until her death in 1938.
Carr died in Los Angeles, in 1946, at the age of 68.
