Arthur Treacher was born Arthur Veary Treacher in Brighton, East Sussex, England, in 1894. His father was a lawyer.
After serving in World War I, he established a stage career and, in 1926, went to America as part of a Broadway-bound musical-comedy revue. Treacher appeared in another 12 Broadway productions through 1963.
He made his film debut for Paramount Pictures in 1929, at the age of 35. He appeared more than 80 films through 1964.
Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips, a popular restaurant chain in the 1970s, was named after him and he served as a paid spokesman. The chain, now owned by Trufoods Systems, continues to exist today.
Treacher married Virginia Taylor in 1940.
He died of heart trouble in Manhasset, New York, in 1975. He was 81 years old.
