Biography

BIO

Carl Laemmle Jr. was born Julius Laemmle in Chicago, Illinois in 1908.   His father, Carl Laemmle, was the founder of Universal Pictures.

Laemmle, called "Junior" by his friends and family, started his film career writing and producing short-reel films for Universal in 1926 at the age of 22.   By 1928, he had stopped writing screenplays to focus on producing feature films.   He was also promoted to Head of Production for the studio.

Although he had early success with such films as All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Dracula (1931) and Frankenstein (1931), he developed a reputation for spending too much money on several films that did not break even.   By the end of 1935, the studio had spent so much and had so many flops that both father and son were forced out of the company.   Neither of them worked on another film again.

Laemmle died from a stroke in Los Angeles, in 1979, at the age of 71.
