Biography

BIO

Clint Eastwood was born in San Francisco, California, in 1930.   His father became an executive at pulp and paper processor Georgia-Pacific and he spent his pre-teen and teenage years living in Piedmont, an affluent suburb of Oakland, California.   Kicked out of high school for various infractions, he was later drafted into the U.S. Army and spent his service years at Fort Ord, just north of Monterey, California.

After several years of small roles in mostly forgettable films during the 1950s, Eastwood received a career break with a recurring role in the popular Western television series Rawhide between 1959 and 1965.

In 1964, Eastwood left for Spain to make the first of three films by the Italian director Sergio Leone.   A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), released several years later in the U.S., helped to establish the Spaghetti Western sub-genre, and made Eastwood an international star.

In the 1970s, he cemented his action star status with the “Dirty Harry” trilogy: Dirty Harry (1971), Magnum Force (1973), and The Enforcer (1976).   By this time, he had established his own production company, Malpaso Productions, and directed his first film, Play Misty for Me (1971).

The 1992 film Unforgiven received both popular and critical acclaim, establishing Eastwood as an Academy Award-winning producer/director.   Subsequent films received multiple Academy Award nominations and wins.

Though having sired multiple children through several liaisons, Eastwood has been married twice:

  1. Margaret Johnson, 1953-1984, 2 children, divorced.
  2. Dina Ruiz, former television news anchor, 1996-2014, one child, divorced.
