Daryl Hannah was born Daryl Christine Hannah in Chicago, in 1960.   Her father was a tug boat and barge operator and her mother a school teacher.   Her mother remarried real estate magnate Jerrold Wexler when Hannah was 10 years old.   She was extremely shy as a child and suffered from insomnia.   Her younger sister is the actress Page Hannah (1964- ) and her half-sister is the film director Tanya Wexler (1970- ).

Hannah studied acting and ballet at the University of Southern California and made her feature film debut, at the age of 18, under the direction Brian De Palma in 1978.   She has appeared in more than 60 feature films.

Hannah has also produced several feature films and documentaries and is a staunch environmental activist focused on renewable energy and limiting man-made carbon emissions.

She married the musician Neil Young (1945- ) in 2018.
