Biography

BIO

Edward Arnold was born Gunther Edward Arnold Schneider in New York City, in 1890.

Arnold made his film debut in 1916, at the age of 25, for Essanay Film Manufacturing.   After 4 years of film work, he left for the Broadway stage and spent the 1920s in front of the footlights, appearing in 13 productions beginning in 1919, before returning to motion pictures in 1932.

Arnold appeared as a character actor in over 100 feature films.   His last film role was in 1956.

He married three times:

  1. Harriet Marshall, 1917-1927, three children, divorced.   One child became the actor Edward Arnold, Jr.   He passed away, at the age of 76, in Westlake Village, California, in 1996.
  2. Olive Emerson, 1929-1948, divorced;
  3. Cleo McClain, 1951-1956.

Arnold died from a cerebral hemorrhage in Los Angeles, California, in 1956.   He was 66 years old.
