Biography

BIO

Ellen Drew was born Esther Loretta Ray in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1915.   Her father was a barber.

She won several local beauty pageants before heading to Hollywood to find fame.

Drew was eventually “discovered” working in an ice cream parlor and signed with Paramount Pictures, appearing in her first screen role in 1936, at the age of 21.

She went on to appear in more than 65 features through 1957.

Drew married four times:

  1. Fred Wallace (1935-1940), 1 child, divorced;
  2. Sy Bartlett, screenwriter (1941-1949), 1 child, divorced;
  3. William T. Walker (1951-1967), divorced;
  4. James Herbert (1971 - ?)

Drew died of liver disease in Palm Desert, California, in 2003, at the age of 88.
