Biography

BIO

Ernest Truex was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1889. He was raised in Rich Hill, Missouri.   His father was a doctor.

Truex began acting as a child, making appearances in both regional stock theatre and vaudeville.   He made his Broadway debut in 1908, at the age of 19, and went on to either produce, stage or appear in another 45 major productions through 1965.

He made his silent film debut for Famous Players in 1913, at the age of 24.   He went on to appear in more than 160 feature films through 1965.

Truex turned to television roles in the late 1940s and was featured in the series Jamie (1953-1954).

He was married three times:

  1. Julia Mills, stage actress, (1910-1930), 2 children; widowed;
  2. Mary Jane Barrett, actress, (1931-1938), 1 child, divorced;
  3. Sylvia Field, actress, (1941-1973), 2 children.   His step-daughter (Field’s child from a previous marriage) was the actress Sally Moffet.   She passed away in 1995.   Their son is the actor Barry Truex.

He died of a heart attack in Fallbrook, California, in 1973, at the age of 83.
