Biography

BIO

Gene Lockhart was born in London, Ontario, Canada, in 1891.   His father was a professional singer and Lockhart began performing onstage at an early age.

He parlayed his acting, singing, composing and directing talents into a long stage career.   He also taught acting at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

Lockhart made his Broadway debut in 1917, at the age of 26, and appeared in 14 productions through 1950.   He replaced Lee J. Cobb in the role of Willy Loman in the original production of Death of a Salesman (1949-1950).

He also composed, wrote and performed in the Broadway musical review Bunk of 1926 (1926).   He directed two other productions in 1924 and 1932.

Lockhart made his silent film debut in the 1922, but did not return to make another motion picture until well after the advent of sound. He subsequently appeared in more than 110 feature films.

He received an Academy Award nomination for Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Algiers (1938).

His last film role was in 1957.

Lockhart married the actress and musician, Kathleen Arthur in 1924.   They raised one child, June Lockhart, who would go on to become a television star.   His granddaughter is the actress Anne Lockhart.

He died from a coronary thrombosis in 1957, at the age of 65, in Santa Monica, California.
