Biography

BIO

Jack Nicholson was born John Joseph Nicholson, in 1937, in Neptune, New Jersey.   His grandparents raised him while his mother, who was just 17 years old when he was born, became his “sister”.   Nicholson only found out about this relationship in his late 30’s.

He gravitated to theatre while in high school and headed out to Hollywood at the age of 17 to become an actor.   Nicholson joined the California Air National Guard in 1957 for a 5 year stint.   His weekend training still allowed him to pursue his acting career during the week.

Nicholson’s movie debut, at the age of 21, was a starring role in a “B” movie produced by Allied Artists Pictures in 1958.

He received his first Academy Award nomination for his role in the counter-culture classic Easy Rider (1969) with Peter Fonda.

Nicholson has received 12 Academy Award nominations through 2002.   He has been awarded an Oscar twice for his performances in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) and Terms of Endearment (1983).

He married the actress Sandra Knight (1939-) in 1962. The couple raised one child before divorcing in 1968. Their daughter is the actress Jennifer Nicholson (1963-).

He also has 4 children from relationships with the actresses Susan Anspach (1), Winnie Hollman (1), and Rebecca Broussard (2).
