Biography

BIO

Mary Philips was born in New London, Connecticut in 1901.

She made her Broadway stage debut as a chorus girl in 1918, at the age of 17.   A prolific stage actress, she went on to appear in another 30 Broadway productions through 1945.

Philips made her first film appearance in 1930, at the age of 29, in a short-reel for Vitaphone.   She appeared in 20 feature films during her career.   Her last film was released in 1954.

Philips married the actor Humphrey Bogart in 1928.   With a well established stage career on Broadway, she refused to follow him to Hollywood.   They divorced in 1938.

That same year, she married the actor and long-time friend Kenneth MacKenna.   They remained married until his death in 1962.

Philips died of cancer in Santa Monica, California, in 1975.   She was 74 years old.
