Biography

BIO

Ray Collins was born Ray Bidwell Collins in Sacramento, California, in 1887.   His father was a drama editor for the local newspaper.   He started acting on stage at the age of 14.

Collins made his Broadway debut in 1924, at the age of 37.   He appeared in 9 productions through 1941.

His first film role, in 1930, a was in a short-reel for Vitaphone.

In the mid-1930s, now an established radio actor, Collins began working with Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre. Collins' played three roles in the infamous The War of the Worlds broadcast in 1938.

He went on to appear in more than 75 feature films through 1960.

Collins moved to television roles in the 1950s and 1960s and co-starred in the long-running series Perry Mason (1957-1965).

He married Margaret Marriott, but was divorced in 1924.   He subsequently married Joan Uron in 1926.

Collins died of emphysema in Santa Monica, California, in 1965. He was 77 years old.
