Biography
BIO
Rutger Hauer was born Rutger Oelsen Hauer in Stichtse Vecht, Netherlands, in 1944. His parents were both actors. Never a good student, he dropped out at the age of 15 to work on a freighter.
Hauer began working as an electrician before landing his first role in a Dutch television series, in 1969, at the age of 25. He became famous in the Netherlands as a star in the hit domestic film Turkish Delight (1973) which also received an Academy Award nomination for Foreign Language Film.
Hauer received international acclaim for his turn in the sci-fi classic Blade Runner (1982).
He has appeared in more than 95 feature films.
Hauer was married to Heidi Merz and the couple had one child before divorcing. He married his long-time girlfriend Ineke Ten Kate in 1985 and the couple also raised a child.
He died in Beetsterzswaag, Friesland, The Netherlands, in 2019, at the age of 75.
