- Bambi, a Life in the Woods (1923)
- by Felix Salten (1869-1945)
Felix Salten was an established author and theatre critic in Vienna, Austria when his novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods was published in 1923. All of his works were banned after the Nazi occupation of Austria in 1938.
Walt Disney Productions purchased rights to the story in 1937 and planned it to be the follow-up to the smash hit Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). However, difficulties with animating deer realistically, among other issues, slowed production down and the film was not released until 1942, after the start of World War II.
The film almost broke even after it's initial theatrical run, although performed far below studio expectations.
Although now considered a classic by many, critics initially gave the movie mixed reviews.
