directed by Mikhail Romm

Joseph Stalin was personally involved in the development of Soviet cinema and an admirer of the John Ford film The Lost Patrol (1934).   Mosfilm was asked to produce a Soviet version.   Mikhail Romm's first feature-length directorial effort was released in 1936.

Hungarian-born Zoltan Korda was impressed by the picture and used it to craft the Hollywood screenplay for Sahara (1943).

Philip MacDonald, who wrote the 1927 novel Patrol on which The Lost Patrol (1934) was based, is credited with the original story.
