BIO
J. Carrol Naish was born in New York City, in 1897. He began his entertainment career in a vaudeville child act. Later, in Paris after the end of World War I, Naish formed his own song and dance act. He was steaming from Europe to Asia in 1926 when his ship developed engine problems, leaving him stranded in California.
He made his silent film debut that same year for Fox Film, at the age of 29. Naish went on to appear in more than 180 feature films.
He was twice nominated for a supporting actor Academy Award for his performances in Sahara (1943) and A Medal for Benny (1945).
His last film was released in 1971.
In addition to his film roles, he often appeared on television later in his career. He starred in the series The Adventures of Charlie Chan (1957-1958).
Naish married Gladys Hearney in 1929. They raised one child.
He died from emphysema in La Jolla, California, in 1973. He was 77 years old.
