Biography
BIO
Arthur Hornblow Jr. was born in New York City in 1893. His father was a playwright and later a theatre critic. Hornblow attended Dartmouth College and received a law degree from New York Law School before serving as a counter-intelligence officer during World War I.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Hornblow began his entertainment career as a playwright and had four of his plays produced on Broadway between 1922 and 1930.
He then headed to Hollywood and became a producer for Paramount Pictures. His first film was released in 1934. He was 41 years old.
At Paramount, he was known for his comedies and produced more than 20 films through 1942.
In 1944, Hornblow moved to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, his ex-wife Myrna Loy’s studio, and began producing more serious fare, working at the pace of one movie per year for the next decade.
Hornblow became an independent producer in 1954 and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Motion Picture for Witness for the Prosecution (1957). His last film was released in 1962.
Hornblow then turned to writing and publishing children’s stories along with his third wife, Leonora.
He married three times:
- Juliette Crosby, stage actress, 1924-?, divorced;
- Myrna Loy, actress, 1936-1942, divorced;
- Leonora Schinasi, 1945-1976.
Hornblow died in New York City, in 1976, at the age of 83.
