Biography

BIO

Binnie Barnes was born Gertrude Maude Barnes in London, England, in 1903.   Her father was a policeman.

Barnes began performing as a music hall singer before she appeared in her first British feature film for Gainsborough Pictures in 1931 at the age of 28.   She was lured to Hollywood by Universal Pictures in 1934 to star in her first picture.   The film was unsuccessful, but Barnes remained in Los Angeles as a busy supporting actress.

She appeared in more than 75 feature films through 1973.

Barnes married Samuel Joseph in 1931 and divorced him in 1936.   She subsequently married the actor/producer M.J. Frankovich (1909-1992) in 1940 and the couple adopted three children who include production manager Mike Frankovich Jr. (1942-2007) and producer Peter Frankovich (1946-).

Barnes died in Los Angeles, in 1998, at the age of 95.
