Biography

BIO

Candice Bergen was born Candice Patricia Bergen in Los Angeles, in 1946.   Her father was the acclaimed ventriloquist and actor Edgar Bergen (1903-1978) and her mother was the actress Frances Bergen (1922-2006).

While still at university, Bergen worked as a fashion model and made her big screen debut under the direction of Sidney Lumet (1924-2011) in 1966 at the age of 20.   She followed that quickly with a co-starring role opposite Steve McQueen in The Sand Pebbles (1966).

Bergen received her only Academy Award nomination (for Actress in a Supporting Role) for her performance in Starting Over (1979).

She has appeared in more than 20 feature films.

Bergen first graced Broadway in 1984 and has also starred in a revival of The Best Man (2012) and a revival of Love Letters (2014).

She has also been nominated for 9 Primetime Emmy Awards and won 5 times for her leading role in the long-running Murphy Brown television series (1988-1998).

She married the French director Louis Malle (1932-1995) in 1980 and the couple raised one child.   She married real estate developer Marshall Rose in 2000.
