Cecil Kellaway was born Cecil Lauriston Kellaway in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1893. His younger brother was the actor Alec Kellaway.
He made his film debut in 1918, at the age of 25, for African Film Productions. Kellaway then spent many years as a stage and film actor in Australia before coming to Hollywood in the late 1930s.
His first U.S. film was in 1937, at the age of 44, for RKO Radio Pictures. Kellaway made is mark in a supporting part in Wuthering Heights (1939) and went on to appear in more than a 100 motion pictures as a character actor.
He received Academy Award nominations for his performances in The Luck Of The Irish (1948) and Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner (1967).
His last film role was in 1970.
Kellaway married Doreen Joubert in 1919 and the couple raised two sons.
Kellaway died of arteriosclerosis in Hollywood, in 1973. He was 79 years old.
