Biography

BIO

Edmund Lowe was born Edmund Dantes Lowe in San Jose, California in 1890.

Lowe made his Broadway debut in 1917, at the age of 27, and appeared in another 7 productions through 1922.

Before his New York stage career, Lowe had already established himself on film beginning with a silent feature for Hobart Bosworth Productions (later merged into Paramount Pictures) in 1915.   By the mid 1920s, he was a major film star.

By the mid 1930s, and well into his 40s, Lowe had successfully transitioned into sound, but had become a character actor.   He moved to television roles in the 1950s.   With a career spanning more than 115 feature films, his last picture was released in 1960.

Lowe married three times:

  1. Esther Miller, ?–1925, divorced.
  2. Lilyan Tashman, actress, 1925-1934, widowed.   Tashman died after surgery for abdominal cancer at the age of 37.
  3. Rita Kaufman, costume designer, 1936-1950, divorced.

Lowe died of a lung ailment in 1971, in Los Angeles.   He was 81 years old.
