Biography

BIO

Halliwell Hobbes was born Herbert Halliwell Hobbes in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England, in 1877.

Trained as a Shakespearean actor, Hobbes began touring on stage as early as 1898 and appeared in London’s West End through 1920.

Hobbes made his Broadway debut in 1906, at the age of 29, but did not return to the New York City stage until 1923.   Except for a sojourn to Hollywood during the 1930s and early 1940s, he remained near Broadway, appearing in another 17 productions through 1955.

Hobbes did not turn to the medium of film until the beginning of the ‘talkies’.   His first foray was in 1929, at the age of 52, for Pathé Exchange.

He appeared in more than 105 feature films through 1956.

Hobbes was cast along with Nancie B. Marsland in the Broadway play The Swan (1923-1924).   They were later married and she performed sporadically as Nancie Halliwell Hobbes between 1926 and 1945.

He died of a heart attack in Santa Monica, California, in 1962, at the age of 84.
