The Scottish-born writer Robert Louis Stevenson had already established a reputation as a first-class story-teller with Treasure Island (1883), when he penned Strange Tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1886. It quickly became an international best-seller.
Samuel Hoffenstein (1890-1947) and Percy Heath (1884-1933) were tasked with writing the screenplay. Heath was a veteran of the silent screen while Hoffenstein was trying to establish himself in film. Both received an Academy Award nomination for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931).
