Biography

BIO

Rose Hobart was born Rose Kefer in New York City in 1906.   Her father, Paul Kefer, was first cellist for the New York Symphony Orchestra.   Her parents divorced when she was a child.

Hobart began her career as a stage actress, making her Broadway debut in 1923, at the age of 17.   Over the next 15 years, she would appear in 24 Broadway productions.

Her first film role was in 1930, at the age of 24.   She graced more than 40 films through 1949 when her career was prematurely cut short.

Hobart landed on the Hollywood blacklist after being called to testify in front of the congressional Committee on Un-American Activities.   As a consequence, she was denied acting work for more than a decade, during which time she became an acting counselor.

In the 1960s, she was offered a few television guest roles and was a cast member of the soap opera Peyton Place (1966-1969).

Hobart married three times:

  1. Benjamin Winter, (m. ?-1929), divorced;
  2. William Grosvenor, Jr., (m. 1932-1941), divorced;
  3. Barton Bosworth, architect, (m. 1948-?), one child, divorced;

She died in Los Angeles, in 2000, aged 94.
