Biography

BIO

Herbert Marshall was born Herbert Brough Falcon Marshall in London, in 1890.   He was trained as an accountant.   During service in World War I, Marshall lost his leg. Given a wooden replacement, he worked hard to hide his limp and then changed careers to pursue acting.

After more than a decade in regional theatre, Marshall made his West End stage debut in 1923, at the age of 33.   The year before, he had already twice appeared on the Broadway stage.   After finishing out the English theatre season in 1925, Marshall returned to Broadway and appeared in another four productions through 1932.

He made his British film debut for Herbert Wilcox Productions in 1927, at the age of 37.   He quickly became a leading man on both sides of the Atlantic, signing with Paramount Pictures in the U.S. and Gainsborough Pictures in England.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Marshall turned to television guest roles. After a career spanning more than 70 feature films, his last picture was released in 1965.

Marshall was married five times:

  1. Mollie Maitland, actress, 1915-1928, divorced;
  2. Edna Best, actress, 1928-1940, one child, divorced.   Their daughter was the British actress Sarah Marshall [1933-2014];
  3. Elizabeth 'Lee' Russell, 1940-1947, one child, divorced.   Lee was the sister of film star Rosalind Russell.
  4. Patricia "Boots" Mallory, dancer, 1947-1958, one child, widowed;
  5. Dee Anne Kahmann, merchandiser, 1960-1966.

Marshall died of a heart attack, in Los Angeles, in 1966.   He was 75 years old.
