Starring Tallulah Bankhead, the 1939 play was a Broadway hit and ran for 410 performances before touring the U.S. Except for the star, several of the play's actors reprised their performances in the film version.

Lillian Hellman also wrote the film's screenplay.

The director, William Wyler, had previously worked with Bette Davis in two successful releases and insisted on her starring in the role.


Unfortunately, it marked the end of their relationship.   They had a severe disagreement over how a particular scene should be played and never worked together again.
