Biography

BIO

Ilka Chase was born in New York City, in 1900.   Her mother was Edna Woolman Chase, the editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine.

A respected stage actor, Chase made her Broadway debut in 1924, at the age of 24.   She continued to return to the New York stage most of her life, appearing in 20 productions through 1967.

Chase recorded her first film role for Pathé Exchange in 1929.   Her most notable film was Now, Voyager (1942) with Bette Davis.   By 1949, she had turned to television guest roles.

After more than 25 features, her last picture was released in 1960.

She also published more than a dozen books, including two volumes of her autobiography and one biography of her mother.

Chase married three times:

  1. Louis Calhern, actor, 1926-1927, divorced.
  2. William Murray, radio executive, 1935-1946, divorced.
  3. Dr. Norton Brown, 1946-1978.

Chase died of internal hemorrhaging in Mexico City, Mexico in 1978.   She was 77 years old.
