Biography

BIO

Laurence Fishburne was born Laurence John Fishburne III in Augusta, Georgia, in 1961.   His father was a corrections officer and his mother a teacher.   His parents divorced when Fishburne was a child and his mother moved the family to Brooklyn, New York.

He began his acting career as a child, appearing in his first television movie in 1972, at the age of 11.   He appeared in his first film in 1979 and went on to become an award-winning actor on both the Broadway stage and in Hollywood, as well as a writer, producer, and director.

Fishburne received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his first Broadway stage role in Two Trains Running (1992) and a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play for Thurgood (2008).

He also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in What’s Love Got to Do With It (1993).

Fishburne has received several Primetime Emmy Awards and nominations for his television producing, acting, and narration.

He has married twice:

  1. Hajna O. Moss, actress, 1985-199?, divorced.   The couple raised two children: actor Langston Fishburne and actress Montana Fishburne.
  2. Gina Torres, actress, 2002-2018, divorced.   One child.
