Lesley Manville was born Lesley Ann Manville in Brighton, Sussex, England, in 1956. One of three daughters, her mother was a former ballet dancer and her father drove a taxi.
Trained as a singer and dancer, Manville made her professional stage debut at the Old Vic in 1973, at the age of 17, and continues to appear on the English stage.
Manville was awarded the Laurence Olivier Prize for Best Actress for her work in the 2013-2014 English revival of Ghosts.
She appeared in her first British television episode in 1974 and spent almost a decade in the genre before appearing in her first feature film in 1985.
In 2011, she was nominated for a Supporting Actress BAFTA Award for her performance in Another Year (2010).
She has appeared in more than 25 feature films.
Manville married the actor Gary Oldman in 1987 and the couple divorced in 1990. Their son, Alfie Oldman (b. 1988), works as a film cameraman.
She married the actor Joe Dixon in 2000 and divorced in 2004.
