Louise Fletcher was born Estelle Louise Fletcher in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1934, one of four children. Her father was an Episcopal missionary and both her parents were deaf.
After matriculating to the University of North Carolina, Fletcher went to Hollywood and began appearing in television roles by the time she was 24.
Her first film role, at the age of 29, was a Universal Pictures production in 1963 after which she took 10 years off to raise her family.
Fletcher’s break-out role was as “Nurse Ratched” in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) with Jack Nicholson for which she received the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Besides various television roles, two for which she received Emmy nominations, Fletcher has appeared in 60 movies through 2013.
She married the film producer Jerry Bick (1923-2004) in 1959. The couple raised 2 children before divorcing in 1977.
