Lumsden Hare was born Francis Lumsden Hare in Tipperary, Ireland, in 1874.
He began his career as a stage actor and made his Broadway debut in 1900 at the age of 26. He returned to the New York stage in 1906 and appeared in 36 productions through 1942. Hare also staged 5 productions.
He first appeared on celluloid in a silent short-reel for William A. Brady Pictures in 1916 at the age of 42. A busy character actor, Hare appeared in 135 full-length pictures through 1959.
He married twice. His first wife was Frances Rutledge. His second wife, with whom he had one daughter, was the stage actress Selene Johnson.
Hare died in Los Angeles, in 1964, at the age of 89.
