Miles Mander was born Lionel Henry Mander in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England, to a wealthy industrial family in 1888. He attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada and served as captain in the British Royal Army Service Corps during World War I. Mander spent part of his 20’s in New Zealand raising sheep with his uncle.
In 1920, Mander appeared in his first British film role, at the age of 32, for George Clark Productions.
As an actor, Mander appeared in more than 95 feature films through 1947.
He also produced and/or directed 6 feature films between 1923 and 1936, and was a credited writer on 9 movies between 1924 and 1936.
Mander left England for Hollywood in 1935 and remained there working as a character actor.
He married the Indian princess Prativa Devi, daughter of the Maharajah of Koch Bihar. He subsequently married Kathleen French, an Australian, in 1923. The couple raised one child.
Mander died suddenly of a heart attack while eating out in Hollywood, in 1946. He was 57 years old.
