Biography
BIO
Timothy Spall was born Timothy Leonard Spall in London, England, in 1957, the third of four sons. His father was a postal worker and his mother a hairdresser. Spall received a scholarship to the National Youth Theatre and later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
He began appearing on stage as a professional actor in 1978 at the age of 21 and continued to appear sporadically through 1993.
Spall made his film debut also in 1978 and has appeared in more than 65 feature films to date.
He has twice received a BAFTA Award nomination for Actor in a Leading Role for Secrets & Lies (1996) and Actor in a Supporting Role for Topsy-Turvy (1999).
He was diagnosed with leukemia in 1996, but has kept the disease in remission and the pedal down on his career.
Spall and his wife Shane (m. 1981) have raised three children including the actor Rafe Spall (b. 1983).
