Clarence Budington Kelland, a writer of magazine serials and children's books, had nearly 30 films produced from his stories, most notably Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) an adaptation of his short story Opera Hat which first appeared in serialized form in the monthly magazine The American between April and August 1935.
Robert Riskin, Academy Award-winning screenwriter for It Happened One Night (1934) and frequently collaborator with director Frank Capra, wrote the screenplay.
