Pinocchio (1881)

Carlo Collodi (1826-1890), a politically active and censored Italian author, learned to express his views through allegory.   He honed his skill while working in the Censorship Department for the Theatre.   Toward the end of his life, he began writing children's stories.   The Adventures of Pinocchio was first published as a serial in the Giornale per i bambini in 1881.   Translated into more than 240 languages, it is now one of the most popular books ever produced.

The story was significantly altered by Walt Disney Productions to make Pinocchio more likeable.   The character "Jiminy Cricket" was added as an advisor and his song When You Wish Upon a Star became a #1 hit.
