Schindler's Ark (1982)

A two-time winner of Australia's Miles Franklin Literary Award when he strolled into Poldek Pfefferberg's (1913-2001) leather goods shop in Los Angeles, Keneally was persuaded by the owner, a Holocaust survivor and factory worker for the entrepreneur Oskar Schindler, to write a book about Schindler's exploits to save his employees - mostly Jews - during World War II.

The non-fiction work was awarded Britain's Man Booker Prize in 1982.

Pfefferberg then helped convince the film director Steven Spielberg to turn the book into a movie where he was both depicted and served as an advisor.
