Biography

BIO

Paul Henreid was born Paul Freiherr von Wassel-Waldingau in Trieste, Italy, in 1908.   His father was a wealthy Austrian banker. He studied theatre in Vienna and debuted on stage under the direction of Max Reinhardt.

He began his film career in 1933 with a German feature by Universum Film.   After the Nazis rose to power, Henreid left for Britain.   With the start of World War II, he was to be deported as an enemy alien, but friends spoke for him and he was allowed to remain free in England.   A small role in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939) then led him to Hollywood.

In 1942, Henreid reached his career peak in Now, Voyager opposite Bette Davis and Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

He continued to appear in motion pictures through 1940‘s and in the 1950’s began directing for both film and television.   He directed 28 episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1957-1962) and 10 episodes of The Third Man (1962-1965).

He married Elizabeth Gluck in 1936.   They raised two children. One became the actress Monika Henreid.

Henreid died of pneumonia in Santa Monica, California, in 1992. He was 87 years old.
