The short story The Letter, based on actual events that took place in Kuala Lumpur, Indonesia, in 1911, is included in this collection published in 1926.

Maugham adapted the story into a play that premiered in the West End in 1927. A hit in London, the play also opened later the same year on Broadway.

This version is a remake.   The original was released in 1929 by Paramount Pictures.   Herbert Marshall appeared in both films, although playing different roles.
